Being Biblically Spiritual

There is a phrase gaining popularity now that says, “I am not religious, but I am spiritual”. A child of God should reflect before using this phrase because God’s religion is focused on being spiritually united with Him. Humans are spiritual beings at heart because God—a spiritual being—created mankind. Children of God are meant to bring glory to Him on Earth and then return to their spiritual home in Heaven (John 17:13-18).

We do nothing to deserve our opportunity to go to Heaven. God, however, has mercy on us and sent His son to die on the cross for our sake. Jesus opened the door to Heaven for God’s children, but it is each child’s choice to walk through it with Christ. The famous hymn, “Trust and Obey”, by John Sammis says it best, “Trust and obey for there's no other way to be happy in Jesus, but to trust and obey.”

The war against sin is waged in our hearts and minds (Prov. 4:23). Yet, Ephesians 6:10-20 tells us that those who unite themselves with God are not sent into battle without protection. Amongst the armor of God is the sword of the Spirit. The Spirit of God is bestowed to His children during baptism and helps us interpret God’s spiritual truths (1 Cor. 2:11-13). One of these truths is expressed in Matthew 7:1, “Judge not, that you be judged. (ESV)” The type of judgement expressed in this verse is based on worldly standards. To say, “one can never pass judgement” would be an incorrect explanation of this verse. Children of God are taught to use the Holy Spirit in their heart as a tool for righteous assessment (1 Cor. 2:14-3:3). Matthew 7:2-5 shows an incorrect use of Holy Spirit discernment. God’s Spirit is not a gauge of righteousness and is not to be used with worldly standards.

Romans 2:11 states, “For God shows no partiality. (ESV)” The son of God sits with tax collectors and sinners. If a person walks with Christ, they do it with meekness, patience, and most importantly love. Christ’s love is the only thing that can keep us from sin. Showing His love to others is the only way to live peacefully for eternity. Remember, “Trust and obey for there is no other way…”
