Heart Exam: A Pleasant Instrument

Singing is such a big part of our lives. We sing when we are happy, sad, angry or bored. For almost every emotion, there is a psalm, hymn or spiritual song that can help us during those times. It is even said that those with dementia can remember words to songs well after forgetting the names of those familiar to them.

God, in His wisdom, uses songs as a way to uplift our hearts and instruct us of His ways. Paul, as he talks to those in both Ephesus and Colossae, tells the people of the importance of singing. To those in Ephesus he says, “speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody with your heart to the Lord;” and to those in Colossae he says, “Let the word of Christ richly dwell within you, with all wisdom, teaching and admonishing one another with psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with thankfulness in your hearts to God.”

The danger certainly is to get caught up in the melody of a song, or simply in the rhyming of words, rather than the Truth that lies within the psalm, hymn or spiritual song. The focus of the song should be on the words themselves and what we can learn from them. The Psalmist says in Psalm 104:33, “I will sing to the Lord as long as I live; I will sing praise to my God while I have my being.”  It is such a blessing to know God wants us to sing to Him as part of our worship. What a blessing to know that we can praise God in song as well as helping others grow in His word.
